Creative and Innovative (C&I) Grants

Porter students should be the primary (but not necessarily the exclusive) beneficiaries of the project. Grants must be highly rated according to some (but not all) of the criteria below:

•  Does the project facilitate Porter students' work as creative artists and innovators (in any and all fields)?

•  Does the project involve Porter students as makers of art and proponents of cultural or societal or scientific change (rather than only as audience members)?

•  How many students will directly benefit from this grant? How many Porter students? How will these students benefit?

•  How will this project have a positive affect on the Porter community as a whole?

Grant proposals must include a detailed breakdown of expenditures. Late or incomplete applications will not be funded.

Deadlines are 5PM on the third Thursday of Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Application forms and further information can be obtained from the Porter Student Activities office.

Porter Research Fellowships

There are up to four Research Fellowships to be awarded by Porter College.

The Program:
The program has two essential but completely separate components:

1. A paid job working for a faculty member in the student's major department: approximately 7 hours/week at approximately $10/hour for one or two terms during the upcoming academic year.

2. A 2-5 unit independent study (199) during EACH of the terms of the Fellowship, in which that faculty member guides the student in her/his OWN independent research project.

BOTH of these requirements must be met during each term of the Fellowship.

Eligibility:
Eligibility is further limited to current Porter College students who will be juniors or seniors during the quarters for which they are applying and who have a good to excellent academic record. The likelihood that the student will benefit from advanced instruction in the proposed area is a key consideration in the selection of successful applications.

Deadline:
Applications are due in the Porter College Office by noon on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

The Fine Print:
Porter College will provide $700 for one quarter or $1400 for two quarters for the student to be paid at a rate around $10/hour for approximately seven hours per week of research assistance to the faculty member - approximately sixty to seventy hours per quarter. The $700-$1400 provided by Porter College must cover the hourly rate PLUS the cost of benefits to the student. (Student employment can assist with calculating this.) All funds provided by Porter College in fulfillment of this grant must be paid to the student as salary and benefits.

In return for the assistance with her/his research, the supervising faculty member will guide the student in the student's OWN independent research project (or undergraduate thesis) in the context of one 2-5 unit independent study during each term of the Fellowship. The student's research must culminate in a completed project by the end of the second term.

Student and faculty member must apply together -- each completing a part of the application form below after discussing the nature of the projects involved. Students are encouraged to approach faculty to offer their services as an assistant and to arrange for the independent studies (199's). Form should be completed via email by noon on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

Hitchcock Poetry Fund

Porter College is soliciting applications for funding for poetry-related projects to be undertaken during the upcoming academic year. Grants will be provided from an anticipated gift of $20,000 for the year from Porter Emeritus George Hitchcock. This gift comes in association with an endowment provided by Professor Hitchcock in enduring support of poetry at Porter College. (Please see "Background of the Hitchcock Poetry Fund" below.)

Funds may be requested in any amount. However, requests are expected to exceed available funding by a factor of three or more and many proposals will very likely receive no funding at all. Last year the Advisory Committee distributed funding over a number of smaller projects rather than two or three large endeavors. Funding decisions will be made according to the criteria below and according to the priorities and judgement of the Poetry Advisory Committee, the Porter Executive Committee, and the Porter Provost.

Deadline:
Applications are due in the Porter College Office by noon on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

Eligibility:
Proposals are welcome from ALL UCSC faculty (including Lecturers and Emeriti). Students who wish to propose projects must make arrangements with a UCSC faculty advisor who will agree to review and submit the application for funds and who will actively guide the completion of the students' project should funds be awarded. Proposals are particularly sought from faculty fellows and students of Porter College. [See "Criteria" and "Background of the Fund" below.]

Criteria:
Funding is available for a wide variety of projects related to modern and contemporary poetry. Projects may include residencies for poets, readings by poets, commissions for song cycles, a poetry prize, support for performances of poetry-related projects (theater, music, art), a poetry-related conference, etc. The limits are wide and include theory as well as many forms of practice.

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of the work, the numbers of UCSC students and faculty involved and/or affected, and relevance to Porter College students and faculty. (While students and faculty not associated with Porter are specifically included in this call, each project must, in SOME aspect, involve Porter College students and/or faculty and the degree of Porter involvement will be a factor in the selection process.)

To Be Considered:
Applications must by sent via EMAIL to Porter Provost Assistant, Susan Beach, Porter College: porterprovost@ucsc.edu and to Provost David E. Jones, dej@ucsc.edu. (See APPLICATION FORM below.) Supporting materials may be sent to the Porter College Office and referenced in the emailed application.

Background of the Hitchcock Poetry Fund:
In summer 2002, George Hitchcock, an emeritus colleague who taught at Porter College and in the Department of Literature, set up an endowment of approximately $500K to take effect at the time of his death in support of activities concerning poetry at Porter College. While Mr. Hitchcock is still living, he will fund such activities directly. He began this process with a $20,000 grant for 2002-03 and plans to continue to give annual grants in this approximate amount. The Hitchcock Poetry Fund has already galvanized interest and activity in poetry at Porter College and throughout UCSC.

The Porter Provost, in consultation with the Porter Executive Committee, will make final decisions on the uses of these funds. Initial decisions, however, will be made by an advisory committee set up by Mr. Hitchcock. This advisory group includes Doug McClellan (Emeritus in the Art), David Swanger (Professor of Education, Literature), Tilly Shaw (Emeritus in Literature), Marjorie Simon (poet).
